Chopsticks?

Hmmm....

Evan can't use a fork yet....but seems to be overly talented when it comes to a  clothespin:

He was picking up his cheerios with the back of it...he did it like 10 times...

In the mouth!

Going for another...
Examining it...

In the mouth again!
What talent!   Maybe I should invest in some chopsticks for him?

Last week of August here we come...

It is hard to believe the last week of August is coming.  I am reminded of August last year, when I was home everyday all day with Evan...now he is walking around, starting to say a few words, and drinking out of a sippy cup and eating bacon at breakfast with us.

The flowers are peaking...the Black Eyed Susans did well everywhere this year, and have become more popular here in Minnesota in recent years...which means for me that I now kind of find them less interesting.  I hate it when things become over-popular!  But my Phlox have been gorgeous for well over a month now, and my rose bushes are blooming again...

We have been fighting a bee hive in our backyard now for over a week.  We ripped out a dead tree this spring, and bees burrowed into the ground, into the stump (or so we assume) and made a hive.  We have been trying to drown them, spray them, etc.. for a week but they still dig their way out and swarm above the ground -- definately a hazard for the kids.  At first I kind of felt bad for them...but now I am just annoyed!

A few weeks ago we went to a friend's house and Nathan got to try out a trampoline...he only had one accident -- bit his lip, but other than that, he survived and actually started to enjoy it near the end of the night.

Last Sunday we went fishing.  I brought my camera with but this is the only picture I took:

Grandma and Grandpa called Nathan early this morning to ask if he could go fishing.  We said yes and off he went for the morning - he got back around 2pm and was so tired he fell asleep right away.  But after his nap it was so fun to hear him talk about everything he did - he  got to drive the boat apparently, and hold the rope so it didn't float away, and eat lots and lots of snacks, and he caught 25 fish!  Which I guess is true, he actually got 25 fish.  :-)

I am done pickling but I had a bunch of tomatoes from my mom so I (well, actually we, because Chris REALLY helped me out) canned tomatoes Friday night.  This was after we went to the State Fair - just the two of us.  It was like a date and it was really fun just to hang out together.

We rode the bus -- which, I thought would be fine since we are both daily bus rides but the people that ride the bus to the State Fair are not and thus they are extremely annoying and rude.  It is mostly old people who think they own the world.  Speaking of which, the old people are ruining the state fair with their little carts they ride around in...more than once Chris and I had to jump out of the way because a crazy old man on a scooter was coming up the road and not watching.  One guy drove partially over my toes -- good thing I had sneakers on and not sandals!   It is hard for me to see changes to the State Fair that I don't like...things that were there for years suddenly gone and most people there do not care one bit because they only care about the modern, 'cool' stuff.  *sigh*.   Even the 4-H building makes me sad -- when huge parts of it are overtaken by computers (flight simulators) and aquatic robots I just feel like they have lost their way.

Work is going well - very busy but that is normal as the September 15th deadline is very close.  I worked four days the past two weeks, but I am hoping this week will just be three days and then next week will be four and then it will settle down a tad.

Our fall is getting busy already - Chris has three hunting trips planned, we have a wedding (which I am not sure if the kids are invited or not as I threw away the envelope...what do I do now?!!!), I have training in Wisconsin for a few days, our anniversary, Nathan's birthday, and then the holidays start to creep in...so much to do and enjoy!  I love the fall weather and crisp leaves.

My parents recently purchased a picture of their place and gave us all an electronic copy...the front field is the hay field, and the back field (the top center) is the beef field where the steers are kept in the summer.  The bottom right window on the house was my old room.  It has certainly changed a lot since the last picture they purchased like this...their used to be no houses behind them, there was a second garden to the right of the house, and a lot of the trees were different -- all of my favorite trees I loved growing up have all been knocked down by storms or have died off.  But, as you can see, they definatley have a very big garden...thus, all the great veggies I get to can and freeze!

Parachute!

Nathan's sports class ended earlier this month with a parachute day...the kids all loved it.

Playing ball beforehand...

Chris remembered all the games they played - cat and mouse, and mushroom -- I didn't remember any except for "popcorn"!

Playing cat and mouse

Nathan was really loving it!

Nathan the cat!
After class ended, they all got a coupon to DQ and a blue ribbon!  Nathan was so proud we drove to Grandma's work to show her!

Friends and the farm...

Two weekends ago we hung out with friends and then went and visited a farm...

We saw pigs, cows, chickens, goats, a dog, and...I dunno.  Maybe that was it?

These are our friends...totally cute pic guys!  They keep a really nice blog...check it out - I have it linked on my page or at http://fisq-fiesta.blogspot.com!

Nathan standing next to the silo...he got all cranky when I asked him to stand there.
Both kids wanted to hold Chris' hand...apparently I am chopped liver or something...must be the teacher in her!

Written last night:

Overall, this past week, Nathan has been having a rougher time behaving at school.  We talked about off and on all week because three days he got bad reports.  One day when I picked him up he and three other kids were all getting "talked to" about their behavior.  Apparently they were all fighting and throwing toys.  Argh.  So, you can imagine how disappointed I was when on Friday I go to pick up Nathan and hear he behaved badly when the Firefighters came with the Firetruck.  When it was Nathan's turn to be in the firetruck, he got pushed (or so he says) and then pushed back so his teacher took him out of there and then he just had a tantrum.  So, he couldn't go back in because he wouldn't settle down.   And he was mopey and grumping about it.  So, this weekend I have been extraordinarily strict on him and will continue to be so.

I am hoping he is better next week and it was just a temporary thing!  Evan is getting over his cold but now I have it...it's not too bad, just runny nose and scratchy throat...more annoying than anything and just wears you down.  Evan got a rash all over with this virus too, but that seems to be getting better.  Although I was concerned, at least I didn't freak out like I did when Nathan first got rashes like that.  I guess it takes a couple times around the track to get used to things like that.

Argh.  I have more cukes to pickle.  I am debating whether or not I should do more.  Maybe my friend is right and I will turn into a pickle!

Eggplant and a Saturday night....

I took a picture of these and had to share...fried eggplant!  So good!  We had it about a week ago...I made the batter super thick so it would really stick...and it did.  YUM.

A few weekends ago, my cousin was up visiting my brother and sister.  They called and asked me if I wanted to hang out that night...I was like, sweet, sure!  First we went to Old Chicago, one of my ex-favs.  I say that because the place has gotten rid of my beloved Ace Pear Cider, which they always had on tap and it was delicious - anyways, now it cannot be my favorite and must be punished.  The waiter seriously asked me if I wanted a "Woodchuck Cider" instead because it was "similar".  Yeah, I've had Woodchuck Cider and its not buddy!

anyways, below is me and kevin at dinner!

Karen and Christopher drinkin' it up!

After dinner, Christopher said he wanted to buy us some DQ - well, who the heck can argue with that?  So, Kevin drove us to the DQ and I asked for my favorite - a butterscotch sundae!  Well, the DQ here over off Highway 65 politely informed us that they no longer serve "butterscotch".  I almost crapped my pants!!!  Clearly this cannot be so!  They have pineapple, but not butterscotch?  Frickers!  Well, they don't get my business anymore.

First, no Ace Pear Cider, and second, no butterscotch.  The night was not starting off on the right foot.

After that we went to Brunswick Zone.  Kevin, Karen and Christopher all really wanted to try laser tag.  Not me.  No way.  I would suck at it.  I knew I would.  But, we needed at least four people to sign up.  So, I did it.  And I won!  Granted, it was really lame, but still, I actually won and I have the piece of paper print out to prove it.

We also played some games....

Christopher riding...

Kevin driving...

Playing some coin game...

Boys shooting deer or elk or some other such animal...
Then we went bowling.  I did so well - I usually stink to high heaven!  Not that night!

Here is the crew!

Dude - check out that score below - 147!!!  I would have done good too on the second round if they wouldn't have shut us off with two people left to bowl.    They really should let you finish your last frame even if your hour is up -- pretty bad customer service if you ask me...won't be going there again for a LOOONNNNGGGG TIME.

First real fieldtrip!

Two weeks ago Nathan had his first real fieldtrip to the Como Zoo...his favorite part was the bus ride of course!  Also, Mommy's camera wasn't charged, so we only got a few pics...

so excited to be on the bus!

Here we were by the flamingos waiting for his other classmates to arrive so we could call eat lunch...

Mommy and Nathan on the bus!  I had to borrow one of Daddy's red shirts to wear that day...aren't we cute?!!!

Overall, it was a good day.  When I arrived at school, the person in charge of ordering lunches for the day forgot to order bag lunches...so me and another mom, and some of the teachers, were quickly whipping out PB&J sammies and carrots and apples and tossing them into bags before we had to go...that was the fastest PB&J assembly line I have ever seen!

Myself and the other two adults in our group were at first thinking we would have to move fast through the zoo because we only had an hour and a half to wander...turns out the boys in our group had zoo ADD for the day..as soon as we would see one animal, Nathan and this other little boy would go, "let's go see something else..." Seriously, I was like, how about we look at the animals for like, one second??!!  We got through everything in no time at all and it was more than enough time after an hour and a half..the kids had had it and they were hot, hungry, and tired.  A bunch of them fell asleep on the bus ride home.

Legos, Barbies and Pony's - Oh my!

One year I got this lego airplane set for Christmas - I loved it....which is so ironic now since I absolutely despise flying.

Nathan keeps asking if he is old enough to play with it, and I keep telling him "no".  And then the next day he will ask, "am I older today?" and I will say "yes" and then he will say, "so then I can have the airplane legos?" and then I say "no" to which he says, "OH MAN."

This is one of my Barbie cases...it is packed full of old Barbies and clothes.  I could never throw it out...some of the Barbies are brand new!  Someday I will find a girl who will love them.

This is "My Pet Vet"...a traveling veterinary clinic...for that brief (and may I mention, extremely brief) time period where I thought maybe being a vet like my dad would be fun.  We had a lot of fun pretending with this with our stuffed animals though....

Littlest Pet Shop!!  Just like so many toys, this is the version that was great before they wrecked it!  Have you seen Littlest Pet Shop or My Little Pony these days?  BLAH.  I can't even talk about how horrid Little People are now...

I loved this...I had to set it up before I packed it away...the animals are so cute!

Pony's!

Posie, the yellow with pink hair, was one of my favorites, along with Cotton Candy and the Cotton Candy Baby Pony.

A day in the life...

I don't work most Tuesdays...but I do work...here is what I did yesterday:
Got up at 6AM...fed the baby a bottle, got him dressed, got Nathan dressed, hauled the kids downstairs and waved good-bye to them as Daddy took them to school.

Got out a pad of paper and grabbed a granola bar and wrote down a list of things to do today.  I got EVERYTHING done on my list in this order:

Cleaned Evan's room
Cleaned Nathan's room
Cleaned bathrooms
Jogged a mile (did pretty well, haven't gone jogging in over a month)
Put stuff in attic (or what I now call an attic)
Got rid of Chris' old pictures (pictures with no people in them of places he cannot remember)
Got oil changed (also got the tires rotated, which was good, because one of them had a nail in it and was leaking..which explains why the tire was low this weekend and we had to add air!)
Picked up Evan's 1 year pictures - yae!  So fun!
Did kitty litter
Organized downstairs closet
Started laundry
Paid bills
Made pickles (did four pints, used Chris' Grandma's method and recipe - I was worried the jars wouldn't seal but they did)

These are the pickles I made last week....so pretty!

Vacuumed

I took this picture yesterday because I want to remember how Nathan always insists those gold beads go back on the vacuum cleaner.  Even when I toss them off and put them away, the next time I vacuum, there they are.  :-)
Started dinner (tried new lasagna recipe - got all the pieces ready)
Went to store
Picked up Nathan and took him to the park with the scoop (he has been asking me to go to this one park with a scoop).  -- It was looking like it might rain, but we got to play 30 minutes before the first sprinkles came!  (Daddy picked up Evan so I could spend this time with Nathan)
Went to the library to return books due today and get Nathan some new ones -- I was so excited because this one book, called The Milkman, which Nathan and I love, was being sold for 50 cents.  Maybe it wasn't popular or something, but we loved it...so I got it!

Finish making dinner - this was a real treat.  Nathan has been watching the Garfield movies lately a lot...so he got to help me put together lasagna...he did really well!

All the parts are ready!

Layering noodles...

Sprinkling cheese

Helping Mommy!

Ironed
Put away laundry

Yae!  That was it!

sometimes words don't do it justice...

i can't describe some of today's moments the way I felt about them.  I want the words to be so perfect that the next time i read this post i can relive the moment...but the more i think about the words the more i think about the feelings and i get lost.

nathan was driving evan's choo choo around the kitchen making a ton of noise.  after about five minutes, daddy told him to stop.  I said to Nathan, "if you want to drive that thing around, you have to go down to the basement and do it."  Surprisingly, Nathan went.

About five minutes later, a sad and sorrowful voice from the basement calls up in a weak voice, "i made a big mess.  please come down here.  i made a big mess."  Both Daddy and I are like...oh crap.  Daddy goes down first and I follow...

All it was was that Nathan knocked over some folding chairs...it must have really scared him, because he ran to me and goes, "I was just trying to get my ball Mommy, I am so sorry Mommy, i am so sorry...it was an accident, I am so sorry..."  I just wanted to pick him up and hold him forever and remind him I will always love him no matter what.

After that, all three of us stayed down there and played for awhile with a bouncy ball.  nothing else mattered at that moment.  just being there...bouncing a ball with nathan.

tonight for the first time I read Nathan a story that I loved growing up, "The Giving Tree".  Like Nathan, I always felt sad for the tree.  At the end of the book, Nathan goes, "I wish the tree wouldn't haven't given her branches and trunk up.  I didn't like that part."  I couldn't argue with him..but now as a parent, I can understand why the tree gave those things up.  "And the tree was happy..."

I told Nathan after story that I would bring him up a treat later.  About 20 minutes went by and I grabbed two Jello Pudding snacks, two spoons, and hauled them up to the bedroom.  We ate them in the closet and talked about the vanilla layer and how good chocolate pudding is.  we talked about how grandma jayne puts cream in the pudding and how cream makes a lot of things better.  like applesauce.

he is in my closet right now playing with a car.  soon i will go in there and join him.

i just went and checked on Evan, who is sleeping soundly and doesn't yet know that he is a few days away from leaving the "baby room" at school and moving into the waddler one.  He certainly is waddling around! He even gets upset and starts crying and walking now at the same time to get to me.  It is funny how quickly they go from babies to little toddlers to little kids.  Evan said "hitty" last week for "kitty" but I haven't heard him repeat it, although he is babbling all the time so it may be in there somewhere.

i sometimes wish I could live in a moment forever...there were a few of those moments today.

Nathan just said, "hurry up Mom.  you are taking forever."  so...time to go.

Soccer and Doritos (isn't that such a good combo?!!)

One week of Nathan's classes was kickball, but beforehand the kids had free time with soccer balls.  Nathan totally takes after Daddy and seems to enjoy soccer the best...even Evan thought it was funny...

I love this shot!
Evan started to get tired and whiny, so I said, let's put him in the bag!  And we did, and he thought it was great...

Swinging in the bag!

There were a few nights last week that were really rough...I think this was one of them....gee, can you tell?  (two bags of doritos plus brandy...yikes!)

But Nathan came over and sat next to me and started to crack me up!  He reminds me not to take myself too seriously....
