Changes from an article...

Have you read the "The Overprotected Kid" by Hanna Rosin?

I did a few weeks ago.  It's a long read, but it has stuck with me.

Since then, I have decided to parent a little less like everyone else nowadays, and a little more like how I was raised.

My parents weren't constantly around when we played outside in the backyard.  They weren't there to settle arguments, or to point out how hitting your sister in the head with the baseball bat was wrong, or to help us learn how to swing.  Sure, they would show us once, and then we were on our own.  I think most parents were like that "back then".

I am trying to be a little more like that.

like the days I would spend hours outside playing silly games...coloring on the sidewalk, flooding out the ants, jumping in the pond and trying to hide all the wet clothes from my mom in the hamper (and thinking I had succeeded....)

If you  haven't read it, I think you should.  I find myself "checking" myself when I try to tell the boys what to do, how to do it, or if I should let them know I am watching.  The media has terrified the parents of this generation into thinking everything bad is going to happen to our kids.  While its true that bad things are going to unfortunately happen, we can't live in fear and we can't hold our kids back.  Maybe other parents are better at this (but based on the hovering at the playground, I don't think so).

I was talking to one of my teacher friends who is getting his masters currently (elementary teacher), and he said they are starting to teach future teachers this now and they have a name for it -- "natural consequences".  That made me laugh!

Let your kid learn the "natural consequences" of their actions.  nice.

Three Weeks Old...

I am so behind on this...but, its just going to get worse I think.  We are going to be really busy for the next 12 years.

Here he is around 3 weeks...we were starting to get into a rhythm here....

Sweet little hands.

All three boys with their bear blankets.  Each bear is yellow, but all of them just a little bit different (ears, paws, and ribbons)

Two weeks...or so...

He is a really good baby, but as with all babies, we have our ups and downs.

I thought it would be fun to compare the boys at this age...definitely more similarities (as everyone notices) to Nathan...

Jeffrey...

Nathan - Nathan and Jeffrey have more of my nose...

Evan definitely has more of Daddy's nose.  Evan was born much earlier than both of the other boys too (37 weeks, 4 days) so he was a lot smaller.  Somehow Evan got our recessive blond hair gene that I think has been hiding for a few generations (at least on my side).  He gets the most beautiful blue eyes and fair skin along with it too (Nathan has brown eyes, like Daddy's).  I am really hoping this baby will get my green/mixed eyes!  One of them has to take after Mommy, right????

One (or so) week pics

Time is definitely flying by...it makes me sad I only have seven weeks left...

Here is a picture of Auntie holding him at 6 days old....

She also made sure she hung out with Nathan and Evan.  The boys have been keeping busy at school and were excited for the snow to start melting.  Nathan just had "Dad's Day" at school today and it was hilarious what he said about Dad....

Jeffrey is on a pretty good schedule.  It varies throughout the day but I do a 6pm feeding and then he eats one more time before bed around 9:30/10 and then he usually gets up around 4am.  Last night he slept until 5:30 though so that was exciting...I got up anyways a few times to check on him (of course)...but it was nice to not have to wake up completely.

He is a very alert baby already (at 5 weeks, not these pictures).  I think he may be the social butterfly of the family (so more like Daddy)...he seems to just like being held and listening and looking around.  Evan was my laid back whatever baby, and Nathan was a fussy, needy baby.  It will be an experience to watch them grow up and see what sticks...

As a family we have been busy....which is always good.  I cannot remember what I typed  in previous posts (if anything) or what I didn't (because I am so dang behind) that I may repeat myself -- which I have decided is okay.  Moms have a lot on their minds.

Very cute when sleeping!  - smirky!

This kid rolled over at two days old.  I knew it was a fluke, but he still does it.  He rolls to his side and just yesterday he rolled over twice when I put him on his belly.  I guess he didn't want to be like that.

Some projects...

I took a week off before I had the baby.  I was really hurting at work and not being able to sleep was taking its toll...so, I hung out at home and finished some projects...

This is Jeffrey's lap quilt -- great for the floor for tummy time.

This is the first purse I ever made...possibly the last...it was hard!

I got about 15 more napkins done...got this fabric on clearance which was great...its actually blue and brown....
