County Fair 2016

The third weekend of July, the past two years, we have been busy hauling stuff to the fair.

The kids worked hard, and I ended up having about 13 entries, which surprised me.

Although the wrong direction, below is Nathan's Red Ribbon (2nd place) in the Lego's category, original design.  It was an ice cream cone with sprinkles and he worked on that for a LONG time. We even had to go to the MOA for pink pieces....Evan's was next to it there, at the top, and he didn't place.

Nathan also brought his ship, which didn't win either...legos is a really hard category!

But he was super proud he got first place for his Kinex!

Evan got third place on his!  :-)

Evan got third place for his coloring....Nathan was mad, because his didn't place, so I had to explain to him that he can't color like Evan and expect the same results...

Nathan's paper snake though got a blue...

Evan's brownies got third...overall Evan came out with three third place ribbons...

Nathan's cookies got first!

And this made me LOL! I was so surprised!!!!!!!  My snowflake afghan, the second one I have made (and it was to be a gift for my sister), got Grand Champion!!  I never thought it would, so I was so happy...I sometimes think my crochet isn't good, isn't tight enough, isn't clean enough, but obviously, I was wrong!  :-)

Nathan did so well, here he is with another blue!  This was his Latchhook that took over a year for him to finish...he said he doesn't want to do one again...too bad!

This was my shawl; got second place, which is really good considering lots of shawls and scarves.  However, this shawl only used one skein of yarn..yet, the judge, who obviously has never seen this type of yarn, wrote me a note not to tie knots on color changes...I wanted to say, "i didn't!  that's how it comes!"

Oh well...

My moose....I simply cannot compete with my friend Lisa in this category, her stuff is amazing, so I don't think I will make anything ever again like this, except maybe my bunny nuggets...

This got second place...which is funny, I just saw a picture of it in some catalog, liked the idea, and made it myself without a pattern.  I am actually getting pretty good at seeing something, and then doing it myself or doing my own thing.  I also tend to like little or no quilting on things; the judge didn't like that about this, but whatevs...

Now this made me crack up...these were two dishcloths I made while I taught my SIL how to crochet...completely boring, square, dishcloths, which I eventually gifted away.  Anyways, blue ribbon!  hahahahahaha....

Onto the preserves...I honestly don't remember what I all took...but I do remember my Strawberry Rhubarb jam got second place AGAIN...bah!

They really need to figure out a better way to display these...you can't even see what is in them once they put the tags on...kind of a waste...but I think I got blues on my pickled carrots and pickles...a red on my tomatillo sauce, I think a blue on my tomato sauce...

The next picture is my biggest disappointment of the fair.  I have been making stollen for years for my family; I don't use the candied fruit, since it is horrible, and have used my own recipe that calls for rum-soaked dried fruit such as golden raisins, dates, cranberries, etc...the winner in this category did NOT impress me, so I have decided not to try again here, since either my stollen isn't good like my family says, or, they don't know what amazing stollen tastes like...either way, lose lose.

Monster cookies, another recipe made up by me, second place....

Blue ribbon on my wall hanging...

There was one project I didn't place in...trying to think of what that was...oh! It was my stuffed pumpkins...which were super fun to make and really cute...

So apparently at a lot of county fairs, they are getting rid of ribbons to save on costs.  I am so saddened by this, but it will DIE without the ribbons...why don't they eliminate the lame premiums?  I don't need $2 for every blue...it doesn't even pay for gas so why bother?  But I do LOVE the ribbon...something tangible to hold and keep...I guess now many fairs are just putting a sticker on...umm, are we 5? a sticker?  No thanks, I'll keep my stuff at home if all I get is a lousy sticker...

After we saw the exhibits, we wandered around the fair, saw some stuff, tried to eat corndogs (raw and disgusting!) and then ventured home before noon...

July 4, 2016

Fourth of July!

I made a bunch of cookies, apparently!  I don't even remember doing this.  I wonder if they all got eaten?

Popsicles!

Squash....

Hanging out over a long weekend...Parcheesi on the deck...the game that refused to end...

Mosquitos kept at bay!

And here comes the zucchini bread...hard to believe will have this in a month...

Last summer I took a class on English Paper Piecing.  Very interesting, everything by hand.  I whipped this baby out post class...pretty enjoyable...

On July 3 we had our own little fourth of July family party, since my parents always have a HUGE party at their house on the 4th...anyways, my parents don't make homemade ice cream anymore, so I do it...

There is something amazing about growing up and cranking out your own ice cream...

There were fireworks on the 3rd, and my boys have never been to see big ones...so we took them over to the Anoka ones...I think it was Anoka...

Karen and Cory came with and Karen was ready to POP!

Comparing shoe sizes....

Popcorn in a paper bag just like Aunt Jeanne...

This was Fourth of July at my parents....Chris was driving around some of the kids...apparently I took no other pictures that night...

The next day, on the 5th, we took the boys fishing...

 Worn out....
